Pavel Landovský is not only the enfant terrible of Czech acting, but also the author of the successful play Hotelier. More than forty years after its creation, director Jan Kačer decides to rehearse it with Landovský again. He will be joined by Vladimír Pucholt, Josef Abrhám and Libuše Šafránková. However, Kačer is not so much interested in the return of famous actors to the audience as in an attempt to pull Landovský out of the lethargy to which he is subject due to his health condition. And that, in turn, is not to the liking of the others…
Hotelier is not just a record of the rehearsals of the play, but above all an intimate look into the relationships between its various protagonists. Nor is it a classic documentary, because the line between acting, creating and recording reality is too thin. The film thus reflects not only on the ageing of the outstanding actors, but also on their relationship to the world today, their disappointment with the way Czech film and theatre look today, their fears, aspirations and their efforts to still bring out the best in themselves.
